What Is Otoplasty Surgery?
Dr. Payne is one of the leading doctors for ear surgery, also known as otoplasty. He performs surgical procedures and non-surgical techniques, like Infant Ear Molding.
Cosmetic ear surgery, also known as otoplasty surgery, can improve the shape and the position of the ear. Otoplasty can correct a defect in the ear structure that is present at birth that becomes apparent with development or it can treat misshapen ears caused by injury.
An otoplasty creates a more natural shape while bringing balance and proportion to the ears and face. Correction of even minor deformities can have profound benefits to appearance and self-esteem. If protruding or disfigured ears bother you or your child, you may consider plastic surgery.
If you are an adult and are considering otoplasty surgery, you may also be interested in combining it with another facial procedure for increased enhancement. Many patients combine otoplasty with blepharoplasty or rhinoplasty surgery.
What Can Ear Surgery Treat?
Overly large ears: A condition called Macrotia
Protruding ears: Occurring on one or both sides in varying degrees — not associated with hearing loss
Ear deformities: folded ears, or misshaped ears
Can Children Have Otoplasty Surgery?
Otoplasty can be performed on children after the age of 5 years old. Dr. Payne can perform this procedure on both children and adults.
The staff was so pleasant and welcoming. Sonia was fantastic at making me feel comfortable and aware of my earlobe repair procedure. Dr. Payne communicated with me during the entire process and was sensitive to any discomfort that I had. It was not painful, and I’m so excited to heal and wear hanging earrings again.
What to Expect Before Otoplasty Surgery
It is completely normal to have questions and to be nervous about undergoing a procedure. During your first consultation, Dr. Payne and his staff will guide you through each step of the process, assess your medical needs, and answer any of your questions. We will also take photos and discuss your concerns.
What to Expect During Otoplasty Surgery
If you have an issue with protruding ears, typically Dr. Payne will reshape the cartilage with sutures to pin back the ears. He may also reduce the size of the ear by removing cartilage. Dr. Payne will shape your ear in surgery to help place your ear into its proper position. Incisions for otoplasty are generally hidden on the back surface of the ear.
Will There Be Sutures with Otoplasty Surgery?
Internal non-removable sutures are used to create and secure the newly shaped cartilage in place. External stitches close the incision. Techniques are individualized, taking care not to distort other structures and to avoid an unnatural “pinned-back” appearance.
What to Expect After Otoplasty Surgery
This type of surgery offers near-immediate results. When the ears begin to heal properly, Dr. Payne will remove the sutures. The ears will be permanently positioned, and most surgical scars will be well hidden behind the ear. Dr. Payne will monitor your new ears to ensure they heal without issue.
How Much Does Otoplasty Cost?
The price of otoplasty often depends on factors like insurance, hospital and anesthesia fees, and the severity of the ears. The experience of the surgeon, his specialties, and his training can also be a factor. The average cost of otoplasty ranges from $3,000-$5,000 per ear.
